COLUMBUS — Virginia Nell Gunter Hackman, 84, died July 20, 2025, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, at Union M.B. Church, with the Rev. Christopher McSwain officiating. Burial will follow at Sturdivant Cemetery in Caledonia. Visitation is from 2-6 p.m. Friday at Carter’s Funeral Services. Carter’s Funeral Services of Columbus is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hackman was born April 14, 1941, in Caledonia, to the late Freeman Gunter Sr. and Gerline Smith. She was a member of Brownlee U.M. Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, and siblings, Pauline Miller, Pearline Henry and Lesia Ann Smith.

She is survived by her children, Wanda Faye Baker, Sandra Kaye Gunter, Eddie Jean Gunter, Carolyn Jean Hackman, Sheryl Denise Shirley and Lisa Ann Casey, all of Columbus, Cathay Jo Hackman and Daniel Lee Gunter, both of Caledonia; siblings, Edith Manuel and Janice Richmond, both of Columbus, George Richardson of Northport, Alabama, Therman Richmond of Smith, Alabama, Mary Miller of Memphis, Tennessee, and Dennis Johnson of New Albany; 24 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
