Date of notice: December 3, 2025
Sarah Elizabeth Brummett was born on January 10, 1929. She was born to loving parents, John Bankhead and Corene Brewer Jernigan; a farmer and housewife in Caledonia, Mississippi.
Sarah attended Caledonia High School where she was the Salutatorian of the graduating
class of 1946. She went on to continue her education in Memphis, Tennessee where she studied Business at Draughon’s Business College. While in Memphis, she met Ottis Wayne Brummett of Oxford, Mississippi, the man that would become her husband in 1947. Together they welcomed three daughters. They moved back to Caledonia, Mississippi to continue raising their family across the street from her parents, in a home that Ottis built for them.
Sarah was talented in many areas. She could play anything you asked of her on the piano without ever learning to read music. She used those talents to bless the congregation for many years at Flint Hill UMC in Caledonia, Mississippi when her talents were needed. Her faith remained strong throughout her 96 years on this earth. She also found joy in artwork, cooking, and keeping close tabs on the local weather.
She kept a home full of love, wisdom, laughter, and good food; where she hosted many holiday get togethers and helped keep her many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She loved to spend her weekends at various music houses around Lowndes County, Mississippi and Lamar County, Alabama where she liked to show off her musical abilities. Until she retired, she worked as the head inspector at McCoy Manufacturing, “The Garment Plant”, in Caledonia, Mississippi.
Even at 96 years young, she had a sharp memory and an amazing ability to know who everyone was in the community, as well as her large extended family. She enjoyed her later years indulging in her favorite ice cream, Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla, KFC, and watching her westerns.
She was loved by many and memories of her will last throughout generations. She leaves behind an extensive family, who will miss her dearly.
She left her earthly home in the early morning hours of October 15, 2025, in the care of family who made it possible for her to remain in her home.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 50 years, her only sibling, Johnnie Frances Mordecai and her nephew, Russell Scott Mordecai.
She leaves behind her three daughters, Gwendolyn Kaye Lee (Thomas), Susan Denise Stafford & Ruth Ann Faris (James); two nieces, Becky Robertson (Tony) and Marion Wright (Eddy); grandchildren, Heather McIntyre, Matthew Lee (Brittany), Schatzi Collier (Tony), Steven Jenkins, Kristen Conley (Trey), Dustin Calahan & Macy Faris; great-grandchildren, Michael (Danielle) Gonzalez, Brandon Logan, Christopher Logan, Jayden Lee, Josalyn Lee, Brooklyn Lee, Amelia Lee, Korbin Lee, Korene Hankins, Kimberly Jenkins, Mattison Higgins, Everly Conley, Aurora Conley, Katie Calahan, Dawson Calahan & Mallorie Calahan; great-great-grandson, Theodore “Teddy” Gonzalez.
