WEST POINT — Sammie Lamar McNeel, 81, died Jan. 3, 2026.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at Calvert Funeral Home Chapel, with Keith Carter officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Bluff Cemetery in Mantee. Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. McNeel was born Aug. 19, 1944, in Clay County, to the late Thomas and Minnie Griffin McNeel. He was a graduate of Clay County High School in Montpelier and served as Sheriff of Clay County.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Mary Hurt, Clara Hampton, Sue Thomas, Robertine Morley, Eleanor McNeel Roebuck, Bilbo McNeel Sr., Tommy McNeel, Vernie McNeel, James Montgomery, Charles Montgomery and Bob Montgomery.
He is survived his wife, Jeannie Johnson McNeel of West Point; daughters, Melinda Herrington of Tupelo and Melissa Miller of West Point; stepsons, Shelby Staten of Milan, Tennessee, Jeromiah Staten of Hamilton, and Marcus Staten of Raleigh, North Carolina; three grandchildren; and two step grandchildren.
Pallbearers are John Gleen McNeel, Elois Parker, Jeromiah Staten, Cody Staten, Lee McNeel and Cooper McNeel.
