COLUMBUS — Gene A. “Effer” Sherrod, 63, died June 19, 2026, in Grenada.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, at Pilgrim Rest M.B. Church in Brooksville, with Tommy Sherrod officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-6 p.m. Friday at Carter’s Funeral Services. Carter’s Funeral Services of Columbus is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Sherrod was born Oct. 7, 1962, in Columbus, to Mattie Sherrod Austin and the late Willie James Hill. He was a 1981 graduate of S.D.Lee High School and a graduate of Mississippi State University. He was formerly employed with Kroger, Sanderson Plumbing and Systems Construction.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his children, Javon Petty of Columbus, Corey Williams and Courtney Williams, both of Tacoma, Washington; siblings, Tommy Sherrod, Dennis Sherrod, Mildred Lyons and Jackie Sherrod, all of Columbus, Ethel Lanier of Biloxi, and Jimmie Sherrod of Starkville; and two grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be R.L. Hunter, Tavoris Sherrod, Connie Sherrod, T’mar Sherrod, Fredrick Sherrod and LaShawn Sherrod.
