COLUMBUS — Francis Eugene Slater, 83, died Aug. 24, 2025, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle. 

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, at Mt. Vernon cemetery. Memorial Funeral Home and Crematory of Columbus is in charge of arrangements. 

Mr. Slater was born Oct. 17, 1941, in Denison, Iowa, to the late Frank and Edna Peters Slater. He was a graduate of Denison High School and was a veteran of the United States Navy. He was formerly employed as a carpenter and construction director primarily in restaurant construction. 

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Beatty Slater; daughters, Pamela Hege of Decatur, Georgia, and Kim Watkins of Portland, Oregon; and two grandchildren.
