Elbert Drungo Jr.

Elbert Drungo, Jr., age 71, departed this earthly life on Saturday, October 11, 2014. He was born on April 30, 1943 in Columbus, MS to the late Elbert Drungo, Sr. and Mary Jane Drungo. He graduated from R.E. Hunt High School in Columbus where he was the captain of the football team. He later attended Tennessee State University where he was selected as an All-American in 1968. He graduated from TSU in 1971. “Drungo” as he was affectionately called, was drafted by the Houston Oilers in 1969. After playing with the Buffalo Bills for one year, he retired from the NFL in 1979. After his retirement, he spent four years as an offensive line coach at Fisk University. He also was employed with the Davidson County Sheriff’s Department. In 1972, Drungo married the love of his life, Deborah L. McMichael, and to this union one child was born, Mary Evelyn Drungo. “Drungo” had a strong faith in God, and was a dedicated member of Lake Providence Missionary Baptist Church. He leaves to cherish his memories, a devoted and loving wife, Deborah; daughter, Mary-Evelyn (Christopher) Pitts; sister-in-laws, Betty Howard, Springfield, OH, Dorothy White, Ruthie and Mildred Drungo, Columbus, MS; brother-in-law, Robin (Vicki) Brown, Las Vegas, NM; special sister, Rose-Marie Joseph; a beloved brother, Morris Townes, Houston, TX; loyal niece, Melissa Johnson, Columbus, MS; devoted friends of the family, Henrietta Harden and Richard Shaver; other loving nieces, nephews, cousins, former teammates, and many friends. A special thank you to Dr. Eric Raefsky (deceased), Dr. Todd Bushman, Rev. H. Bruce Maxwell and staff, Mrs. Betty Howard, Dr. Mitchell Wiatrak, Dr. John Chauvin, Dr. Trent Wallace, Dr. Sydney Hester, Dr. Laura Blakely, Tennessee Oncology, Mrs. Sarah Perry, Summit Medical Center Outpatient Rehabilitation Services, family friends, neighbors, and Alive Hospice. Services are 7 P.M. Thursday, October 16, 2014, at Lake Providence Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. H. Bruce Maxwell officiating. Visitation will be held from 6:00-7:00 P.M. Interment is Friday, October 17, 2014, at 10:00 A.M. at Christ Church Cemetery in Nashville, Tennessee. Terrell Broady Funeral Home, Inc. is entrusted with arrangements.
