STARKVILLE – Arthur Ganong Davis, 86, died Jan. 29, 2021. A memorial service will be held Tuesday at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Starkville. A graveside visitation will be held Tuesday from noon-1 p.m., followed by a short service at 1 p.m. Welch Funeral Home in Starkville is entrusted with arrangements. Mr. Davis was born Nov. 29, 1934, in Clarksdale to the late J. Harper Davis and Shelby Ganong Davis. He graduated from Clarksdale High School in 1952 and attended Mississippi State University. During his junior year he was named 1954 Southeastern Conference “Player of the Year” by the Nashville Banner and Atlanta Constitution, and during his senior year he was named 1955 All American and “Player of the Year” by the Football Writers Association of America. He was a former NFL player for the Pittsburgh Steelers. After his football career, he was as a coach for multiple high schools and colleges. He worked at Mississippi School Supply Company, the Development Foundation at MSU as director, and worked in public relations for United Southern Bank and First National Bank of Clarksdale. Arthur was a member of St. George’s Episcopal Church in Clarksdale In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Habig Davis; and brother, Harper Davis. He is survived by his daughter, Diane Davis Jones of Starkville; son, Douglas Arthur Davis of Lake Oswego, Oregon; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
