Anne Barkley

Anne Duncan Barkley, 85, passed away January 4, 2026, at Elison Assisted Living and Memory Care in Marietta, Ohio. She was born on May 31, 1940, in Ripley, Mississippi, to the late Dewey (Dutch) Duncan and Rachel Thomas Duncan. After graduating from Ripley High School, she attended Mississippi
University where she received a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. Later, she attended Mississippi State University and received her Master of Education.
December 22, 1963, she married the love of her life, John Barkley. They made their home in Columbus, Mississippi, where they actively and faithfully served the Lord for many years at East End and Fairview Baptist Churches.
In addition, Anne spent 37 years teaching children in the Columbus City School System including Union, Franklin, Heritage Academy, and Brandon Elementary. She took great pride in her career while making a positive impact on the lives of countless students. She received the Teacher of The Year Award.
After retirement, she and John moved to Williamstown, West Virginia, to be near their son and grandsons. While reaping the benefits of sharing time and making precious memories with their grandchildren, one of the greatest joys of her life, she continued serving God faithfully at Fellowship Baptist Church in Vienna, West Virginia.
Anne loved spending time with friends and family. She is survived by her only child John Barkley, Jr of Muscle Shoals, Alabama; and her two grandsons, Trip and Chase Barkley, and their mother, Raven Barkley of Williamstown, West Virginia.
She is preceded in death by her parents and husband.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at Fairview Baptist Church in Columbus, Mississippi.
