WEST POINT — A West Point juvenile is in the hospital in Tupelo recovering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Detective Mike Burgess of the West Point Police Department reports the shooting occurred Monday around 4:30 p.m. in a wooded area on West Point”s walking trail, Kitty Bryan Dill Memorial Parkway, behind the post office near Travis Street.
Witnesses reported seeing several black males fleeing the scene. Investigators are pursuing several leads, but no arrests have been made.
The victim, whose identity and age are not being released, remains sedated at North Mississippi Medical Center-Tupelo and has not been questioned in the incident, Burgess said. He declined to speculate on a motive until a statement can be retrieved from the victim.
“We really don”t know until we can talk to him,” said Burgess.
The victim was struck several times, but Burgess was unaware if the victim had been struck in the head, torso or extremities. Paramedics had stabilized the victim by the time Burgess arrived on the scene.
