They are there in all shapes and sizes, every color and every temperament waiting for someone to give them a real home.
The West Point/Clay County Animal Shelter, since opening in August, has become the temporary home to more than 70 dogs and puppies and numerous cats and kittens.
While many of the animals have been successfully adopted, the adoptions cannot keep up with the demand for kennel space from animals in need. Likewise, the shelter”s small, part-time staff, headed up by former West Point police chief Bill Gibson, and current rotation of volunteers cannot keep up with the demands of caring for so many animals.
On Saturday, from 9:30-10:30, the shelter will hold a meeting in the upstairs meeting room of West Point”s City Hall for everyone interested in volunteering on behalf of the animals. Like the diversity of the animals themselves, the shelter needs volunteers with a whole host of qualifications and interests.
From simple tasks like running errands of picking up food and supplies, providing an extra hand or a batch of cookies for special adoption days, becoming a dog walker or cat entertainer to working in the office or on the grounds or fostering dogs for the Homeward Bound program or long-term residents who need a break from the facility, there is a volunteer opportunity for just about anyone of any age at the WP/CC Animal Shelter.
Existing volunteers are asked to attend this meeting as well those interested in becoming volunteers or learning more about the shelter.
The WP/CC Animal Shelter is located at 1212 Old Tibbee Road. Shelter hours are 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9 a.m.-12 noon on Saturdays. The shelter can be reached at 662-524-4430.
