The Columbus-Lowndes Development Link wants to do more than usher in new business and industry. The chamber of commerce and economic development merger wants to welcome newcomers to the area. And Saturday kicks off the Columbus Newcomers Program with an orientation and tour of the city.
“The objective … is to get newcomers to come to our orientation and let them know all Columbus has to offer,” said Maureen Lipscomb, who heads membership programs and education and is the certified retirement director for the Link.
Starting in January, a Link committee had a series of meetings, at which committee members “felt like we needed to do more to make our newcomers feel welcome to the area,” Lipscomb said.
From these meetings, the Columbus Newcomers Program was born.
The Link also plans to offer more printed materials at its offices, 1102 Main St., to help new and potential residents find such things as cable and phone service.
In addition to quarterly orientations, the Link will offer individual and small group tours, by appointment.
“Even if they”ve lived here for six months to a year and are still wanting to learn more about Columbus, they are more than welcome,” Lipscomb said. “We”re just trying to make it easier to move into the area and try to be a little more helpful.”
The newcomers orientation begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Tennessee Williams Welcome Center, 300 Main St. Call or email Maureen Lipscomb at 662-328-8369, mlipscomb @cldlink.org, to reserve a seat.
Another tour is scheduled for the following Wednesday, May 25 at 5.30 p.m.
