Area unemployment in June rose an average 1% from May, according to data the Mississippi Department of Employment Security released this week.
Noxubee and Oktibbeha County rose the most, currently sitting at 5.8% and 4.2%, respectively. Lowndes and Clay County rose to 4.1% and 3.8%.
June rates for all four counties rose between 0.9% and 1.4% from the previous month, but improved between 0.8% and 1.3% in each county compared to June 2022. Oktibbeha County showed the most improvement year over year.
On the state and national level, Mississippi unemployment rose 1% from 3% in June and the nation rose 0.4% from 3.4%. However, the state rate fell 0.7% from 4.7% in June 2022, while the national rate remained 3.8%.
The number of unemployed people in Lowndes and Oktibbeha rose to 1,000 and 930, respectively. In contrast, Clay and Noxubee rose to 350 and 200, bringing the total number of unemployed people in the Golden Triangle up by 634 people since May.
Across all four counties, there are 2,480 people unemployed, marking a 27.4% improvement from June 2022.
There are currently 49,800 unemployed people in the state, down 28.4% from 2022. Across the nation, there are 6,351,000, compared to 6,334,000 in June 2022.
