Two men are recovering from minor injuries, after a head-on collision near Columbus Air Force Base”s east gate, Wednesday at about 2 p.m.
A red 1996 Corvette driven by Airman Michael Carter, of Austin, Texas, was heading southeast, away from the base”s main entrance on Airbase Road when a Toyota pick-up truck — traveling in front of Carter — driven by Herman Smith, of Columbus, slowed to make a left turn onto Land Road.
Carter swerved the Corvette into the left lane, according to Smith. The car collided with a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am driven by Gerrell Herron, of Columbus.
Witnesses say Carter was able to get out of the Corvette and walk around after the accident.
Herron was seen talking to witnesses before being taken away by an ambulance.
Both men were treated and released from Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle Wednesday.
“Evidently, he just didn”t see me trying to turn,” said Smith after the accident.
“They always fly up and down this road,” said Pam Stockman, who lives in a mobile home just outside CAFB”s main gate. “They don”t go 45 (mph) like they are supposed to. Somebody needs to do something.”
The accident is under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
Carter is stationed at CAFB; the accident occurred only about a hundred feet from the base”s main gate.
