A Columbus man died over the weekend after allegedly being tasered by Columbus Police Department officers, according to Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant.
CPD officers were dispatched about 6 p.m. Friday to the 600 block of Avenue B, Merchant said, for reports of a nude man. When officers arrived they learned the suspect, identified as Jeremy Finch, 39, had allegedly assaulted an elderly woman.
Finch became combative when officers attempted to detain him and, after a struggle, he was tasered, Merchant said. He had to be tasered again while being treated in an ambulance.
Finch went into cardiac arrest while being taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle, Merchant said. He died Sunday afternoon.
The state medical examiner’s office will perform an autopsy, Merchant said, and the investigation is being handled by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.
