A 26-year-old Columbus man was injured Wednesday when he and two other men tried to outrun a train in his mother”s white GMC Yukon XL.
Adrian Erby, who had two outstanding warrants for his arrest in the Jackson area, was driving east on Seventh Avenue near Railroad Street at about 2 p.m. when he swerved off the pavement and onto the tracks.
The SUV was sideswiped by the Columbus And Greenville Railway train, which was going about 4 mph and towing one car full of bricks from the Columbus Brickyard.
Erby, of 1415 Ninth Ave. N., complained of pain in his arms and legs and was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle in non-critical condition, said his sister, 30-year-old Easha Erby.
Officers at the scene were checking to find what charges Erby was wanted on, said CPD Chief Joseph St. John, who was also there.
The other two men in the vehicle ran from the scene after the crash, a railway employee said.
Police officers said they found beer bottles near the exits of the vehicle, which was badly scraped and dented but whose engine still started.

A 26-year-old Columbus man was injured Wednesday when he and two other men tried to outrun a train in his mother”s white GMC Yukon XL.
Adrian Erby, who had two outstanding misdemeanor warrants for his arrest in Jackson, was driving east on Seventh Avenue North near Railroad Street at about 2 p.m. when he swerved off the pavement and onto the tracks.
The SUV was sideswiped by the Columbus And Greenville Railway train, which was going about 4 mph and towing one car full of bricks from the Columbus Brickyard.
Police officers said they found beer bottles near the exits of the vehicle, which was badly scraped and dented but whose engine still started.
Erby, of 1415 Ninth Ave. N., and the two other men in the vehicle initially fled the scene, although Erby later returned to the vehicle, said CPD Public Information Officer Terrie Songer.
At the scene, Erby complained of pain in his arms and legs and was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle in non-critical condition, said his 30-year-old sister, Easha Erby.
He was released after treatment because officers could not immediately reach anyone with the Jackson Police Department who could verify the status of his warrants, Songer said Thursday.
CPD charged Erby with driving with a suspended license, driving without insurance and leaving the scene of an accident.p.
