OKTIBBEHA COUNTY — A Friday morning trailer fire displaced eight people in the Sessums community in Oktibbeha County.
East Oktibbeha firefighters responded to a call at 129 Railroad Spur Road, east of Starkville, at 10:05 a.m. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, which originated from a cooking accident in the kitchen.
“The proverbial grease on the stove,” said Kirk Rosenhan, county director of fire services. “One of the occupants thought he had it out but didn’t.”
Rosenhan wasn’t sure how many of the eight residents were home at the time, but everyone inside the trailer escaped unharmed.
The trailer, however, was destroyed.
Several hot spots throughout the frame of the trailer, including one near a large bundle of clothes, forced firefighters to knock down walls.
District 5 Volunteer Fire Department assisted with the fire.
The trailer was a standalone structure on a dead-end road, Rosenhan said.
The Oktibbeha County Emergency Response Volunteer Service is assisting the family with shelter, food and personal items.
While on the way to the fire, the East VFD truck overturned after hitting loose gravel. The driver of the truck was unharmed, but the truck was totaled, Rosenhan said.
The truck is the oldest in the Oktibbeha County fleet and was due to be one of the first replaced this year.
