Tractor Supply Co. is the latest addition to Columbus” retail market.
The farm and ranch supply store is building a new store on Highway 45 North, just north of Creekstone Chevron.
According to Kenny Wiegel, building official for the city of Columbus, Tractor Supply is part of a burgeoning commercial market, though he didn”t have specific numbers on hand.
“From a commercial standpoint, I think we”re pretty pleased with the amount of development that”s going on,” said Wiegel. “It”s actually picked up somewhat in the past couple years.”
Wiegel wasn”t quick to attribute the increase in commercial permits to the country climbing out of recession, but “I would hope that would be the case,” he said.
The Columbus location will be Tractor Supply”s fourth in the state, according to a company press release.
The new store will be located at 4010 Highway 45 N., and will employ 12 to 17 full- and part-time team members.
The 19,097-square-foot store will include sales floor and support service space. A fenced exterior space will be used for storage and displaying items such as fencing, sprayers and livestock equipment.
Construction began on Aug. 8 and should be completed by January 2012.
In other commercial development, Dollar General is adding a new store in Columbus, on Highway 69 South, just north of Biddy Saw Works.
Hibbetts Sports is opening a location in the Gateway Shopping Center in East Columbus the first week of September.
In the Magnolia Place shopping center on Old Aberdeen Road, PetSmart is scheduled to open in October.
Bojangles Famous Chicken and Biscuits is scheduled to open in November, in the old Taco Bell location on Highway 45 North.
Umi Japanese Steakhouse will open in the Windchase Center on Highway 45 North between Ashley Furniture and It”s Fashion in January or February of 2012.
Chick-fil-A is scheduled to open off 18th Avenue North, on the land now occupied by the former Caney Fork building.
