A 16-year-old male was arrested Monday for bringing a stolen gun to the Frank P. Phillips YMCA downtown.
The teen posted a photo of himself on social media brandishing the firearm, according to a Columbus Police Department press release issued Tuesday. A comment accompanying the post read, “At the Y.”
A concerned citizen notified the YMCA, the press release said, and employees called 911. Officers responded and arrested the teen in the gymnasium, where they found the handgun in a backpack, Public Information Officer Johannah Owusu told The Dispatch.
Police discovered the weapon had been stolen and charged the teen with possession of a stolen firearm. He will be processed through youth court.
Owusu told The Dispatch there were no overt threats made in the social media post indicating the teen intended to use the firearm. She said police are still investigating how he obtained the weapon.
In an emailed statement sent Tuesday to The Dispatch, YMCA Director Jimmy Woodruff expressed appreciation to the citizen who notified his employees and CPD’s “exemplary job” handling the incident. He said The Y is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.

“Monday’s incident at the Downtown YMCA was very unfortunate because the YMCA has always been known as a safe place. We value that reputation and always work diligently to maintain safety in our facilities,” the statement reads. “It’s hard to watch our youth make poor choices. We, at the Y, pledge to continue to guide our youth members as best we can. Because keeping our members safe is of the utmost importance, our YMCA staff was alert and quick to respond to the potential danger. We are working to develop active shooter protocols to help us respond to emergency situations as they arise.”
