Wet weather conditions did not put a damper on the annual Columbus Christmas parade Monday night, according to Main Street Columbus Director Amber Murphree Brislin, but there were not as many participants as planned.
Mississippi State University head football coach Dan Mullen was scheduled to be in the parade, but was unable to attend. Four Bulldog football players from the Lowndes County area were in the parade — Tyson Lee, Derek Sherrod, Tobias Smith and Baker Swedenberg. Bully, the bulldog mascot, joined them.
“They were a big hit of the parade. The crowd loved them,” Brislin said.
Judges picked the following winners among the floats. Stephen Chapel Missionary Baptist Church was awarded first place, which includes $75 and a plaque. Smith Landscaping won second place and received $50, while Hope Community Church netted third place and $25.
The Best Overall Band went to the New Hope High School band; they received $50.
Brislin praised the efforts of the police and the Columbus Public Works Department.
“All of them worked hard to ensure a good parade. Public Works did a great job cleaning up afterwards. You couldn”t tell there was a parade,” she said.
