The state fire marshal office will investigate the cause of a Saturday evening fire that destroyed a Columbus home on Moores Creek Road.
Columbus Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson Anthony Colom said state officials were coming in as a matter of standard procedure. The fire destroyed the home of CFD Capt. Michael Scott Swain. Colom said it is best for the department to have an outside agency investigate the cause in such cases.
No one was home when the fire began. No injuries were reported. It took roughly three hours to extinguish the flames, according to Colom.
The Red Cross assists families whose homes have been destroyed under these circumstances.
“Fortunately, we were notified and able to help the family,” said Nicholas Garbacz, the disaster program manager of the Red Cross’s Northeast Mississippi offices in Tupelo.
Garbacz did not go into details on this family’s status, but did say the Red Cross ensures families have all basic needs handled in these situations. Typically, the Red Cross is notified right away and can contact the family within 10 minutes of such an incident and can help put them into temporary housing if needed, Garbacz said.
