On Jan. 22, trainers with the Mississippi Council on Economic Education will be in Starkville to work with area teachers who want to implement the Mississippi Stock Market Game in their classrooms.
More than 2,600 students throughout the state currently are engaged in the Stock Market Game in which teams are given a hypothetical $100,000 to invest in the stock market over a 10-week period.
Elementary students who have participated in the game scored an average of 12 points higher than their peers in math tests, and high school SMG participants scored eight points higher in math than those who had not played the SMG.
In Mississippi, 36,061 students in 7,812 teams have participated in this statewide competition, provided by the MCEE.
The grand prize winning team and teacher in each year”s Mississippi Stock Market Game win an all-expense paid trip to New York City.
Students tour the Federal Reserve and the New York Stock Exchange, experiencing Wall Street and the financial capital of the world.
Teachers can attend no-cost training programs to learn how to use the SMG and receive one-half of a continuing education unit along with the curriculum materials.

Jan. 29: Cleveland
The SMG is the only stock market simulation supported by the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq Stock Market.
Mississippi businesses sponsoring the SMG for 2009-2010 are Merrill Lynch, BancorpSouth, Entergy, State Farm Insurance, Trustmark Bank and The Clarion-Ledger.
