Ice began accumulating today on roads and bridges in north Mississippi and the nasty weather led to numerous school closings.
The Mississippi Department of Transportation said ice was reported in at least 10 counties this morning and afternoon as a winter weather system pushed across the region.
National Weather Service meteorologist Brad Bryant says there may be light sleet and snow late today and Saturday south of U.S. Highway 82, but most of the precipitation and freezing conditions were expected north of there through Friday night.
Across the Golden Triangle, light rain and some sleet was falling this morning and afternoon, but Lowndes, Oktibbeha and Clay counties were not included in National Weather Service winter storm warnings or river flood advisories.
There”s a threat of power outages in extreme north Mississippi if ice accumulates on power lines and trees.
Public schools in several north Mississippi counties closed Friday. The University of Mississippi also closed early.
