STARKVILLE — A former sanitation department worker is facing a police investigation, according to city officials.
Aldermen gathered for a special-call meeting Tuesday, in part to discuss suspending the employee without pay while Starkville Police Department conducted the investigation. During the meeting, Vice Mayor Roy A. Perkins, who was running the session in Mayor Lynn’s Spruill’s absence, said the issue was “moot.”
Human Resources Director Navarrete Ashford told The Dispatch the employee had resigned prior to Tuesday’s meeting, and SPD had not filed any charges yet in the matter.
Perkins, speaking to The Dispatch, would not comment on the nature of the investigation. Officials also did not release the former employee’s name.
In unrelated business, the board accepted the low bid of $117,873 to purchase three mobile concession stands for Cornerstone Park from Coast to Coast Mobile Custom Vending of Douglas, Georgia. The final sale is pending negotiations related to a manufacturer’s warranty.
A concession stand will be placed in each of the three sections at Cornerstone Park and supplement the permanent concession stand facility being built at the entrance, Ward 2 Alderwoman Sandra Sistrunk said.
“They are mobile, so they can also be used at McKee Park, J.L. King Park or wherever (as needed),” Sistrunk said.
The $20-million-plus Cornerstone Park is still under construction off Highway 25. Once complete, it will boast tournament-ready baseball and softball facilities.
Third-party contractor Sports Facilities Management, which manages all the city’s parks, will also oversee the concession stands, Sistrunk said.
