A four-vehicle wreck Thursday in Columbus resulted in a seven-months pregnant woman being taken to the hospital.
The incident happened at around 8 p.m. on Highway 45 North in front of Pepper’s.
The vehicles involved were heading north and include a silver Camry, a red Pontiac Grand Am, a white Dodge Charger and a white Honda Accord.
The wreck happened like a domino effect, and Lt. Jeff Guyton with the Columbus Police Department called it a “chain reaction wreck” where the Camry slowed down and was struck by the Pontiac, which was hit by the Charger, which was hit by the Accord.
The drivers of the vehicles were Shannon Lolley, 33, of 77 Savannah St. in Columbus, driving the Camry; Tevin Dumas, 19, of 48 Morgan Lane in Columbus, driving the Pontiac; Phillip Hampton, 25, of 506 Cottonwood Drive in Starkville, driving the Dodge; and Brittany Buckhalter, 21, of 9672 Old Highway 50 E. in West Point, driving the Accord.
The pregnant woman — Melinda Savage, 29, of 48 Morgan Lane in Columbus — was a passenger in the Pontiac, the vehicle that received the most rear-end damage. According to a witness, the airbag deployed and hit Savage in the stomach.
Savage was transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle. Savage and her baby’s status are unknown as of press time.
Columbus police and Columbus firefighters responded to the scene. The collision happened in the left lane, and police directed traffic around the wreck.
It is unknown whether citations will be issued.
