Over the years, the Golden Triangle has developed a strong support network of nonprofits that serve those who struggle to find their way back into society.
Groups such as Last House on the Block, Recovery House, Sally Kate Winters, House of Grace, Golden Triangle Homeless Coalition and The Dream Center Golden Triangle, among others, continue to be a haven for those who have nowhere else to turn.
The reputation we have developed through the years speaks well of the character of our citizens, whose support has allowed these organizations to grow and prosper.
At this week’s Rotary Club of Columbus luncheon, one of those organizations made a plea for financial support to complete a new men’s sober living residence.
Crossroads of Columbus offers transitional housing for men coming from rehab, prison and sometimes right off the street, all of whom are struggling with addiction.
The facility, Friendship Church located on Yorkville Road in Lowndes County, was donated to the organization in 2023. Before it could be opened to house men, it needed a new roof, a sprinkler system, plumbing and new flooring. This year, the group has received about $68,000 through fundraising efforts and donations, but they need an additional $31,000 to finish the project. When completed, the facility will accommodate 32 men.
It will be Crossroad’s third facility since the organization was founded five years ago. To date, Crossroads has served 250 men.
Making donations to Crossroads, as well as dozens of other nonprofits based in the Golden Triangle is a good investment in our community, changing the trajectory of thousands of people, transforming them from hopelessness and poverty that plague communities into productive men and women who contribute positively to the community. By supporting these nonprofits we not only help those in need, but make our communities stronger.
We have long advocated shopping at locally-owned businesses. We advocate donating locally, too, and for the same reason: The benefits stay here at home, helping our own people.
Organizations such as Crossroads of Columbus deserve our support. For those who want to donate to a specific need, The United Way of the Golden Triangle supports a wide variety of nonprofits.
Invest in our community by investing in these organizations that serve our community so well.
