WEST POINT — District Attorney Scott Colom is proposing to the public an arrangement of carrot and stick.
Come forward publicly with information that leads to the capture of suspects in a deadly shooting Sunday in Club Oasis, get a $5,000 reward.
Give police a false statement on the case, though, and face a potential grand jury indictment.
“We’ve got a carrot, which is the reward,” Colom said Monday evening at a press conference at Clay County Sheriff’s Office. “We’ve got a stick which is the grand jury. The people that do not cooperate, there will be a consequence. Too often in these shootings, we’ve got people who have knowledge that refuse to give information.”
A Columbus woman is dead and 12 others injured after a barrage of gunfire broke out at the nightclub just north of West Point on Highway 45 on Sunday morning, shortly after midnight. Colom identified the fatal gunshot victim as Telisha Chandler, 20.
The club was hosting a party by an out-of-town promoter. Colom said the club was packed, estimating it had between 250 and 300 people at the time of the shooting.
Clay County sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene and found Chandler dead, Sheriff Eddie Scott told The Dispatch before the press conference.
There were also two serious injuries, including one victim shot in the face and another shot three times. Others injured had grazing wounds to limbs, he said.
Despite the presence of more than a dozen security personnel, Scott said armed suspects still made it into the club.
Colom declined to discuss any details about the suspects or how they escaped because there have not been any arrests made.
“We know there are people who have information on what has occurred,” he said, adding some supposed witnesses had already given false statements or are withholding information.
Scott said the club has had a number of violent incidents in the past, and after this latest shooting, he has ordered it temporarily closed.
Anyone with information should call the Clay County Sheriff’s Office at (662) 494-2896 or Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers at (800) 530-7151. Crime Stoppers offers a reward of up to $1,000, Scott said. Those tips can be anonymous but would not qualify for the $5,000 reward from the DA’s office, Colom said.
