An Oktibbeha County man will serve 40 years in prison on an attempted murder conviction.
Jerome Davis, 25, was convicted Tuesday of shooting Calvin Young on July 27, 2021, during a dispute over gambling debt at a residence on Roundhouse Road, a press release from 16th Circuit District Attorney Scott Colom’s office said. A circuit court jury deliberated for about 20 minutes following the two-day trial before delivering the verdict.
Davis was sentenced to 45 years, with five of those years suspended.
The press release said Davis shot the unarmed victim “at point blank range” with an AR-style pistol, then “callously (walked) off and (offered) no attempt at medical assistance.” The shooting was captured on video.
Davis later turned himself in to Starkville police. A grand jury indicted him in September 2022.
“We appreciate the service and dedication of the Oktibbeha County Jury and are pleased they agreed the evidence showed Mr. Davis attempted to kill Mr. Young in cold blood and was only stopped as a result of God’s grace and the good medical attention of Dr. Jason Pryor at (OCH Regional Medical Center),” Colom wrote in a statement after the trial. “We commend Mr. Young for trusting the legal process to get him justice and not taking the law in his own hands. Our continued hope is that young people will understand the life altering consequences of gun violence, not only to other people but also to themselves, and learn conflict resolution and self-control.”
