Some businesses spend money to make money. Oktibbeha County gets free money to save money.
The Oktibbeha County Board of Supervisors opened bids Thursday on a project that will install 348 energy-efficient light fixtures in six county buildings, place automatic thermostats in the county courthouse, replace three air conditioning units at the health department and make a few more cost-saving moves. The changes will be funded by a $175,000 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant awarded in earlier this year.
The low bid on the project was submitted by The Service Company of Meridian with a bid of $177,904. Engineering consultant Jerry Smith is currently reviewing the bids for the board to determine whether the entire project should be awarded to one company or if the project can be broken up amongst several companies to save money.
The board took the bids under investment and will award the project at its June 27 meeting.
While the board was convened for its special meeting Thursday, it handled several additional business items, including unanimously agreeing to allow District 2 Supervisor Orlando Trainer to work with the city of Starkville on sharing services to repair Butler Road and Stowood Road north of Starkville.
The city is asking for use of county trucks and equipment, and possibly the purchase of some clay gravel, to perform work on Stowood Road in city limits in exchange for performing some much needed repairs on Butler Road. The board acknowledged that several roads across the county need work just as urgently as Butler, but chose to seize the opportunity to receive some in-kind help from the city that will save the county money in the long run.
