Three Columbus men have been arrested and charged with possession of marijuana of more than one ounce.
The arrests happened just after 12 a.m. Saturday after officers with the Columbus Police Department initiated a traffic stop at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive off Main Street, said Assistant Police Chief Fred Shelton. The driver of the vehicle was not wearing a seatbelt, Shelton said.
The officer smelled marijuana coming from the car, according to Shelton’s report.
Deputies with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit also arrived at the scene. A search through the car revealed about two ounces of green leafy substances believed to be marijuana in plastic bags and stuffed into various containers, including a glass jar and clear bottle, Shelton said. Officers also found a Glock 22 and a small .38 in the car in the car. Officers also patted down the pockets of the suspects and found about $4,000 in cash, which Shelton said they believed to have been from earlier drug sales.
Evidence was turned over to the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
The driver of the vehicle was Deontae Jones, 23, of 2006 Cherry St. His passengers were Timothy Hudgins, 22, of 500 William Roberts Road and Lonzo Williams, 25, of Columbus. All three were charged with possession of marijuana of more than one ounce.
All three suspects are being held at the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center.
