For the first time in months, there were no confirmed deaths from COVID-19 in the Golden Triangle reported to Mississippi State Department of Health this week.
Only 56 new cases were confirmed in the four-county area since March 19, according to the most recent data on MSDH’s website.
Lowndes County still leads the area in total case numbers with 6,214 confirmed cases reported since the pandemic began a year ago, an increase of 17 cases since March 19. There have been 143 deaths total.
About 15 percent of Lowndes County’s total population — 8,827 residents — have been fully vaccinated against the virus, and there have been 20,861 vaccine doses given in Lowndes County.
At 24 new cases, Oktibbeha County reported more new COVID cases than Lowndes, but still has fewer overall numbers with 4,508 cases. There have been 97 COVID deaths in the county since March 2020.
Roughly 14 percent, or 6,732 Oktibbeha County residents, have been fully vaccinated, and 18,292 vaccine doses have been administered.
Clay County saw only six new confirmed cases this week, bringing its total to 1,814. There have been 54 deaths in Clay County since the pandemic began.
Thirteen percent of Clay County’s population, or 2,593 residents, have been fully vaccinated, and 6,152 vaccine doses have been administered.
In Noxubee County, there were nine new cases of COVID-19 reported, bringing the county’s total to 1,249. There have been 31 deaths from COVID-19 in the county.
Fifteen percent of Noxubee’s population, or 1,553 people, have been fully vaccinated, and 3,717 vaccine doses have been administered.

Throughout the state, there have been 303,942 total cases since the pandemic began in March, with 2,018 reported in the last week and 317 reported on Wednesday alone. Only six deaths were reported the same day, the most recent day data was available on MSDH’s website. There have now been more than 1 million vaccine doses administered throughout the state, with 417,620 Mississippians fully vaccinated as of 8 a.m. Thursday.
Nationwide, COVID-19 numbers are on the rise again, with the United States reaching nearly 30 million cases this week. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Wednesday that the seven-day average of new cases per day is now more than 56,000 across the country, with states like New York and Michigan seeing particularly high increases.
