LOWNDES COUNTY — A single-engine plane carrying a family of four crashed into a pasture in New Hope at about 4 p.m. Saturday. No injuries were reported.
The 1977 Cessna 177B, registered to Kansas-based CHAV LLC, departed Orlando Executive Airport in Florida at 11:58 a.m. EST and was en route to Columbus-Lowndes Airport when it crash-landed at 90 Summerfield Place.
Lowndes County Sheriff Eddie Hawkins said the plane ran out of fuel, prompting the off-airport landing. That model aircraft has a standard fuel capacity of 50 gallons, with a 25-gallon tank in each wing.
The District 3 Volunteer Fire Department, the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office and the Lowndes County Emergency Management Agency responded to the scene at about 4 p.m., according to County Fire Coordinator Neal Austin. No injuries were sustained, Austin said.
Once the scene is secured, the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the cause of the crash. Columbus-Lowndes Airport Manager Dan Duston said the Federal Aviation Administration will visit the site Monday.
