A 17-year-old New Hope High School student was arrested Sunday after a video of him bringing a pistol-shaped BB gun onto campus circulated on social media.
Lowndes County Sheriff Eddie Hawkins told The Dispatch his office received the video Sunday afternoon and worked with Lowndes County School District leadership to identify and locate the suspect.
The video was taken Friday and shows a red bandanna covering a pistol-shaped object in the student’s lap. The camera then pans to show the high school.
Officers arrested and charged the suspect with misdemeanor possession of a weapon by a student and possession of marijuana, which was found with the suspect when officers arrived at his home, Hawkins said.
The suspect will be processed through juvenile court.
“Although it was just a BB gun that he had in his possession, that’s still illegal to have on the school campus,” Hawkins said.
