Starting in the new year, new phone numbers in the 662 area code will start with 471 following an all services area code overlay approved by the Mississippi Public Service Commission.
A number overlay is the introduction of a secondary area code to the same geographic location where one already exists. The number overlay in the 662 area code region will begin impacting customers Jan. 30 as numbers with the 471 area code are assigned for customers getting a new or additional line, according to a Nov. 30 press release from AT&T.
MPSC said in a June 26, 2024 press release that the overlay is being done because the North American Numbering Plan Administrator’s Numbering Resource Utilization Forecast said that numbers in the 662 area code are expected to be used up by the third quarter of 2026.
The new 471 area code will serve all Public Service Commission Northern District counties which includes: Oktibbeha, Clay and Lowndes counties, MPSC said. The new area code will also serve counties in the commission’s central district which includes Noxubee County.
The overlay will not change current numbers with the 662 area code or costs of services and three digit calls like 911 remain the same, AT&T said.
