The Friends of The W today are hosting a meet-and-greet with legislators, from 3-5 p.m. at the Capitol and a reception at the Old Capitol Inn from 5:30-8:30 p.m.
The trip was planned to give Mississippi University for Women supporters a chance to speak with the lawmakers who will decide the school”s fate.
The tradition has been carried on by MUW”s charter alumni group, Mississippi”s First Alumnae Association, formerly the MUW Alumnae Association, since the 1970s. But this year”s event will focus on keeping the school independent. In the past, it has been a way to thank legislators for their work.
Gov. Haley Barbour recommended MUW merge with Mississippi State University in an effort to trim the state”s budget deficit. He also recommended Alcorn State and Mississippi Valley State be merged into Jackson State.
The Friends of The W is a group of alums, community members and other MUW supporters created to fight the proposed merger and raise funds to keep the school independent.
Another item of interest this legislative session is a name change for MUW. MUW President Claudia Limbert has proposed the school”s name be changed to Reneau University. The original alumnae association opposes the move.
