Students from Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science were named as semifinalists in the 2010 National Achievement Scholarship Program.
Melanae Garrett and Majaliwa Mzombwe were included among 1,600 African-American high school seniors designated as semifinalists in the 46th annual National Achievement Scholarship Program.
The semifinalists are competing for about 800 Achievement Scholarship awards, worth about $2.6 million, to be offered in the spring.
About 1,300 semifinalists are expected to fulfill additional requirements and advance to the finalist level in the 2010 program.
Finalists will compete for one of 700 one-time National Achievement Scholarships, worth $2,500 each, which will be awarded on a regional-representation basis. Additionally, corporate and business sponsors underwrite about 100 Achievement Scholarship awards for finalists.
Conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation, the National Achievement Scholarship Program is a privately financed competition operating without government assistance.
The program was initiated in 1964 to recognize academically promising African-American students throughout the nation and to provide scholarships, said NMSC officials.
