The Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science quiz bowl team finished in the top 100 Saturday at the High School National Championship Tournament in Atlanta.
In quiz bowl, teams of four compete to quickly answer questions ranging in topics from math and science to current events and popular culture. The MSMS team, including team captain Noah Lee, Jules Gallo, Jacob Neal and Jackson Williams, was one of two Mississippi teams competing at the national championship.
The team finished the preliminary rounds with a 6-4 record, which qualified it for the playoffs.
MSMS narrowly avoided elimination in round 19 before finally beating the BASIS Cedar Park team from Cedar Park, Texas. The team’s championship effort ended in round 21 when it lost to the Adlai E. Stevenson A team from Lincolnshire, Illinois.
MSMS ultimately finished in 97th place out of the 320 teams competing from 38 states.
