Chase Hazard, owner of Uncommon Living, is adding another venture to her already full plate.
She’s taking the reins of Pizazz Gifts, which celebrates 25 years in business next month. Hazard is purchasing the longtime bridal and gift shop from owner Patti Griffin, who has built a loyal customer base in The Friendly City.
“This is something I’ve always wanted to do,” Hazard said. “I felt it would be a great addition to the things Uncommon Living is already offering. Mrs. Patti has built such a great business and a great relationship with her customers, and we bonded over wanting to always show exceptional customer service in our town.”
Griffin didn’t hand over the keys lightly. She is confident she found the right person.
“I am so excited,” Griffin said. “I’ve had several people approach me about Pizazz over the years, but she was the right one. She’s creative, energetic, kind and is fun to work with. Pizazz is in good hands.”
With new ownership comes a new name. Hazard has rebranded the shop as Saint & Scott, a nod to her parents, Helen and her late father, Scott Pridmore.
“Our close family and friends have always called my mom ‘Saint Helen’ for always putting up with my dad’s craziness and constant teasing,” Hazzard said. “… Saint & Scott just felt right. And when I presented it to my family and friends, they loved it too. It feels like a great way to honor the two people that gave my sister and me the world. … It felt right to have a wedding registry (store) that is rooted in love.”
Saint & Scott is heading back downtown and plans to open around March 17 at 208 Fifth St. S. In the meantime, the current Pizazz location at 2118 Highway 45 N. is hosting a half-off sale throughout February. Hazard says she will keep many of the store’s beloved lines while adding home décor, cookware, bath and bed linens, and more.
Also downtown, Friendly City Books is making its second, and hopefully final, move next month.
Currently at 423 Main St., FCB’s final day on Main will be Feb. 14.
Moving right next door to Coffee House on 5th, FCB plans to open at 109 Fifth St. N. with a reopening date set for Feb. 28 (barring any unforeseen hiccups).
“When we moved last year, the space next to the coffee shop was occupied, so we looked elsewhere,” owner Emily Liner said. “When it became available again, we took a look at it and realized it would actually be perfect for us. So many people think of coffee when they think of books, so being next door to Coffee House on 5th is a no-brainer.”
Liner added she’s inviting folks to help form a “human chain” to move books from Main Street to Fifth Street. If you’re excited to help a local bookstore make the move, join the cause at 2 p.m. Feb. 15.
“I’ve seen other bookstores do it, and it’s a really cool way for people to come together,” Liner said.
Liner added that the new space is smaller, but said it’s cozy and different, just in a new way. Check out Friendly City Books before they move. The more you buy, the less they have to move.
And speaking of moving things around, the folks at The Dispatch appear to be doing some early spring cleaning. Starting at 7 a.m. Feb. 7, it will host a garage sale with a little bit of everything – from Apple computers to vintage typeset trays. Enter through the alley behind the building if you want to see what treasures are up for grabs.
While most of us were hunkered down awaiting the winter storm, CJ’s Pizza opened for a valuable customer. Though closed on Sundays, 4-County called CJ’s to place an order. And the local pizza parlor owners wanted to do their part.
“We didn’t want to get our employees out in case the weather got too bad, but our children and their girlfriends/boyfriends wanted to help,” Owner Brent Teague said. “We loaded up in our 4×4 and took off to work.”
The crew prepped and cooked about 50 pizzas over the next four hours.
“We decided to open up because they all risk their health and lives to make sure we have power and are comfortable,” Teague added. “… It’s the least we could do.”
Help others and do good work. I’ll see y’all next week.
