Jones Restaurant, located at 112 Fourth St. S., will soon serve customers again.
Developer Chris Chain filed an application with the building department for an “extensive renovation” to both the restaurant space and two to three upstairs apartments.
“This is going to be something that is going to be done in stages,” Chain said. “We’re going to try to get the restaurant up and going first and the apartments after that.”
Chain expects the restaurant will be serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner in Catfish Alley by October. The Dispatch could not reach Jones Restaurant owner Laura Jones Chalmers by press time today.
Jones Restaurant, originally known as Jones Cafe, closed a handful of times over the years, most recently in 2019. Sallie Mae Jones first opened the restaurant in the 1940s, and I’m excited to see customers lining the streets once again to patron Jones Restaurant in the ever-famous Catfish Alley.
Moving toward Highway 45, we have some changes at Columbus Place. Sports Additions, which is run by Hibbett Sports, closed permanently earlier this month. However, the good news is that City Gear, another sports retailer operated by Hibbett, is officially open now at Columbus Place. City Gear opened at the former JCPenny spot. Check out the new store for streetwear, sneakers, Nike, Jordans and more. Jeff Gray, Hibbett Sports vice president for store development, added that Hibbett Sports will relocate in the next month to its new location at Columbus Place.
Also in Columbus, La Tienda Familia Hispana at 801 Hwy. 45 N., is looking to expand. Building Official Kenneth Wiegel confirmed the owner’s plans to build an addition to the north side of the building, which will include a small restaurant to serve approximately 70 patrons.

Game Time Athletics is a tumbling gym that offers tumbling classes, private lessons, competition cheer, camps, birthday parties and more. It is open Monday through Thursday 3 to 8 p.m., and Friday 3 to 7 p.m.
