A man is dead after a weekend wreck in northern Lowndes County, according to Sheriff Eddie Hawkins.
The single-vehicle accident happened in the 2600 block of Steens-Vernon Road early Sunday morning, Hawkins said.
Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant said the pickup left the roadway in a curve and struck a mailbox and roadside before hitting some trees, overturning and catching fire. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver was the only one in the vehicle, Hawkins said.
Hawkins said it was not clear yet what caused the accident.
“The accident is still under investigation right now,” Hawkins said. “We don’t know what caused it, whether it was excessive speed or alcohol or something else.”
Merchant said Tuesday morning that a positive identification had still not been made.
“We’re going to have to use DNA or some scientific identification,” Merchant said. “It’s going to be a few days.”
