A Columbus man was arrested Monday in connection to a violent domestic assault that left a 6-month-old infant with a fractured skull.
Willie Guyton III, 28, was charged with one count of domestic violence and one count of child abuse, according to a Lowndes County Sheriff Department press release.
Sheriff deputies responded Thursday to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle following a report of a domestic assault. A subsequent investigation found Guyton had allegedly hit the infant while attempting to hit his girlfriend.
“He was swinging at her and hit the baby,” Sheriff Eddie Hawkins told The Dispatch Monday.
Guyton fled the scene and warrants for his arrest were issued the same day. He was apprehended Monday morning at his workplace in Millport, Alabama, and was taken into custody without incident. Bond has not been set.
The infant was taken to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson for further treatment. Hawkins said the infant’s condition was unknown as of press time on Monday.
