Lowndes County authorities have a second suspect in custody from a mid-December burglary.
Billy Ross Petty Jr., 35, of 1124 Sixth Ave. N. in Columbus, was taken into custody Sunday after a deputy saw him walking along Sixth Avenue North in Columbus, Lowndes County Chief Deputy Greg Wright said.
The sheriff’s office had a warrant for Petty’s arrest on the felony charge of receiving stolen property. The reported burglary occurred on Casey Lane in New Hope.
Petty is being interviewed by investigators. “Those charges could be upgraded,” Wright said.
Crystal Denise Brown, 23, of 1306 Blackjack Road in Starkville, was arrested Jan. 13 evening at a Hardee’s in Starkville. Brown was charged with receiving stolen property in connection with the same incident. She was released on a $5,000 bond.
The sheriff’s office has made a number of burglary arrests in response to the high number of burglaries from the past few weeks. Wright said 49 burglaries occurred in the county’s jurisdiction from Dec. 1 to Jan. 1. The Upper North Columbus, Caledonia and New Hope areas were hit the worst.
Sheriff’s personnel met last week with investigators from the Columbus Police Department, Pickens County, Ala., Police Department and Lamar County, Ala. Police Department to discuss the burglaries.
Arrests made in January burglary
The sheriff’s office arrested three people in connection with a burglary reported last week.
Deputies arrested Padraic Ledon Williams, 48, of 520 11th St. S. in Columbus; Earnest Terell Talley, 44, of 805 Remunda Drive in Columbus; and Billy Morgan, 45, 1059 Spivey Road in Columbus. All three were charged with burglary of a dwelling, a felony offense.
Various items — including tools, a flat-screen TV set and a generator — were taken from a residence on Land Road just after 2 a.m. Jan. 14. Two deputies were patrolling on Mike Parra Road and noticed a vehicle on Downs Road. The vehicle appeared to be suspicious to the deputies, Wright said, and some items, including the generator, were in the truck bed.
“Due to the recent incidents we had in the county and the fact that the vehicle looked suspicious, they stopped the vehicle,” Wright said.
After speaking to Williams, the driver of the vehicle, deputies went to the residence and saw it was broken into through a back window.
The three are at the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center. Bond and initial court dates have not been set.
