West Point and Columbus students will commemorate Walk to School Day Oct. 7 by walking or riding their bikes to school, or taking time out for a walk during the day.
At 7 a.m., students from Catherine Bryan, East Side Elementary School, Central School, Fifth Street Junior High School, First Methodist Daycare and First Baptist Daycare will meet at Sally Kate Winters Park and walk or ride bikes to their respective schools.
Students from Catherine Bryan, East Side and the church daycares will be accompanied by adults.
Additionally, students from Church Hill Elementary School, South Side Elementary School and Clay County Daycare will meet at 7 a.m. at the Bryan Foods parking lot and walk or ride bikes to school.
The West Point Walk to School Day walks and bike rides all begin at 7:20 a.m.; the events are sponsored by Safe Routes to Schools, the City of West Point, the mayor and Board of Selectmen and the Youth Leadership Alliance.
Fairview Aerospace and Science Magnet School in Columbus also will commemorate Walk to School Day; the entire student body will walk one mile beginning at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 7.
Officials with the Mississippi Department of Transportation noted nearly half of all 5-year-old to 18-year-old students walked and bicycled to school, nearly 40 years ago, but today, 85 percent of Mississippi children are driven to school, either by bus or private vehicle.
