The woman who has been the local director of the Institute of Community Services Head Start Program for nearly a decade is handing over the reigns of leadership in favor of new opportunities.
Alma Turner has served as the director of ICS”s Golden Triangle office for nine years. As director, Turner oversees five ICS centers in Lowndes, Noxubee, Clay and Oktibbeha Counties.
“Alma Turner has been such a jewel and a professional staff member spreading the Head Start story in the Golden Triangle area,” said ICS Head Start Executive Director Eloise McClinton.
Turner said she”s leaving for job opportunities which will allow her more time for herself and to spend with her family.
“I have lead a very very busy life for the last 40 years,” said Turner. “I”ve taken very little time for myself and perhaps for my family also. I”m not going to retire, I”m just going to do something with a little different focus.”
Turner, who”s last day will be Tuesday, will be replaced by Hazel Randall who works alongside Turner at the Brickerton office just off Military Road in Columbus.
“I am confident ICS will be in good hands under my replacement,” said Turner.
ICS is a non-profit organization based in Holly Springs. The organization provides support and educational services to preschool children who are seen to be in the greatest need of those services.
Turner also serves on the Columbus Municipal School Board, a position she says she has no plans of giving up. The Utica native has served on the board since March 2004. Turner also served as principal of CMSD”s Demonstration School and as assistant superintendent in the West Point School District.
“You always step out on faith, and that”s what I”m doing now,” she said.
