Miles Layton has joined The Dispatch staff as news editor.
His first day was Monday.
In his position, Layton will work directly with the managing editor in preparing and editing content for the paper’s news section and will also cover Columbus city government.
“Miles is an excellent addition to our newsroom,” Managing Editor Zack Plair said. “He is skilled and experienced. His contributions have already had a positive impact on our product.”
Originally from North Carolina, Layton is a graduate of East Carolina University and he just finished a master’s program at West Virginia University’s NewStart Program and will graduate in December. Layton has worked at newspapers of various sizes, including the The Intelligencer in Wheeling, West Virginia, and The Herald-Standard in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, and edited small weeklies including the Tyler Star-News in Sistersville, West Virginia, and the Chowan Herald in Edenton, North Carolina.
He has most recently been the editor of the Perquimans Weekly in eastern North Carolina.
During Layton’s long career, he has covered everything from city hall to sports. An award-winning journalist, Layton was recently awarded the Henry Lee Weathers Freedom of Information award, an Associated Press honor that recognizes efforts by journalists to uphold the cause of open government.
“After many years working at newspapers big and small, I decided I wanted to work at a family-owned newspaper that cares about the community that it serves,” said Layton.
“Columbus looks like an excellent place to raise a family. People here have already made us feel very welcome.”
Layton is married to wife, Nicole. They have three children, Samantha, 14; Robert, 13; and Joseph, 10; and three dogs.
He replaces news editor Isabelle Altman, whose last day was Friday. Altman has taken a position with the Post and Courier in Charleston, South Carolina.
