National Action Network Field Director the Rev. De-Ves Toon will serve as keynote speaker Friday at the Columbus NAN chapter”s Keepers of the Dream Banquet.
The fundraiser banquet will begin at 7 p.m. at the Trotter Convention Center. Admission is $15. Entertainment will be provided by the Fantastic Mississippi Nightingales.
The Keepers of the Dream Banquet is an annual remembrance of the April 4, 1968, death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The Columbus NAN banquet is held following the National NAN banquet, which was postponed this year because Easter fell on April 4.
Proceeds from the event will remain in Columbus where the local NAN funds scholarships, health awareness programs and other community service events.
The banquet, like membership in the NAN, is open to everyone.
The Columbus chapter formed in 2008 and has grown to include 58 members.
Toon formerly served as National Clergy Coordinator for NAN before being appointed Field Director. He has also organized events in Chicago, Washington D.C., Memphis, Albany, N.Y., and Jena, La.
As field director, Toon works to establish and coordinate nation wide chapters of the NAN.
NAN was founded by the Rev. Al Sharpton in 1991 to “promote a modern civil rights agenda for all people regardless of race, religion, national origin and gender. Toon served as a national senior staff member for Sharpton”s 2004 presidential campaign.
