A man and woman from Columbus were arrested Tuesday following a narcotics investigation that led to a vehicle and foot pursuit through East Columbus.
Daryl Harrison, 35, was charged with trafficking a controlled substance. Courtney Brooks, 33, was taken into custody on outstanding warrants for failure to appear in court.
Investigators with the LCSO Narcotics STING Unit were alerted at about 2 p.m. Tuesday by a confidential informant that Harrison, who was driving a vehicle near the Hardee’s at 203 Alabama St., was in possession of illegal drugs, a sheriff’s office press release said.
Deputies approached the vehicle, at which point Harrison drove away, prompting a brief high-speed chase.
Harrison led officers north on Browder Street, through a nearby neighborhood, then back down Browder Street and onto Maxwell Lane. There, he stopped the vehicle and ran into a wooded area, leaving Brooks and her 7-year-old child behind in the car.
K-9 Rocky was deployed and quickly apprehended Harrison near a swamp just beyond the treeline. Deputies discovered a plastic bag of marijuana in Harrison’s possession, and he was taken into custody without further incident.
A search of the vehicle yielded additional marijuana and THC edibles, though Hawkins did not know the approximate weight discovered. Investigators also recovered approximately $2,000 from Brooks. The child was released to a family member.
The investigation is ongoing and additional charges or arrests may follow, Hawkins said. Both Harrison and Brooks are being held without bond at the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center.
