More details about a Wednesday morning wreck that sent two men to the hospital emerged Thursday.
The wreck happened at around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Highway 45 North and Cal Kolola Road in front of the Chevron gas station. Travis Silvers, 29, of Macon, and Joe Raspberry, 66, of Hamilton, were the two drivers involved in the crash.
Details on exactly how the collision occurred are not official, but Brian Mobley, Mississippi Highway Patrol public affairs officer, said Silvers was driving a commercial truck with a mounted crane northbound on Highway 45 North when Raspberry was heading west on Cal Kolola Road in a white 1995 Chevrolet pickup. Raspberry may have pulled out onto Highway 45, and Silvers tried to swerve around him.
It is unclear where the commercial truck struck the pickup, but the high-impact collision gave the pickup truck heavy front-end damage and left the commercial truck on its side in the highway median.
Raspberry received head injuries and was transported to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, Mobley said.
Silvers sustained non life-threatening injuries, the details of which are unknown.
The commercial vehicle had a McCrary Schwing decal on its crane. McCrary Construction Services is based in Columbus and Tupelo.
Authorities blocked the northbound lanes on Highway 45 North and sent oncoming traffic on a detour for at least two hours after the incident.
Fuel leaked from one of the vehicles, and Hazmat units were called to the scene. Responders from the Mississippi Department of Transportation, Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol, Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office and Lowndes County Volunteer Fire Department were on the scene.
