The eastbound lane of Highway 82 reopened ahead of schedule Saturday afternoon.
Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office issued a press release at about 3:30 p.m. Saturday confirming the reopening and encouraging drivers to remain cautious as regular traffic patterns return to normal.
A portion of the eastbound lane from the U.S. 45 interchange (the Macon exit) to the State Route 182/Main Street Interchange (downtown Columbus exit) was expected to be closed from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.
The weekend closure was part of ongoing repairs to the Old West Point Road Bridge, which will undergo a partial replacement and a 10-inch lift as construction continues through 2026. Crews demolished a damaged portion of the bridge to prepare it for the next phase of work.
The bridge has been closed since October 2024, when the overpass was hit by an 18-wheeler carrying an excavator, marking the fourth time the bridge has been hit since 1994.
