The third season of the Starkville Community Market kicked off Saturday with hundreds of local residents and dozens of vendors crowding the market”s new location at Jackson and Lampkin streets.
Several of the roughly two dozen vendors on hand sold out of produce, while others dealt with lines of people buying arts, crafts and baked goods throughout the morning. Live music was provided by John Robert Arnold and Tom Henderson, and more live performances are planned for the coming weeks, including one next Saturday by Ackerman-based bluegrass musician Alan Sibley.
“It was a great success and it”s only going to get better,” Starkville Community Market volunteer Bill Poe said.
More produce, including tomatoes, should begin showing up at the market in the near future, Poe said. Still, he was thrilled with the turnout, especially considering only seven vendors were on hand during the market”s first day of operation in 2008.
“I think it was awesome,” Poe said. “It was a big crowd there from 8 (a.m.) on. I was so pleased. Everybody had a smile on their face.”
The market was located on South Lafayette Street in 2008 and 2009, but was moved to the new location next to Boardtown Trading Post this year.
“Everybody was so happy the location has changed,” Poe said. “There were lines, especially with the produce, before 8 o”clock. It was great. It”s a great location.”
The market will run every Saturday until late October at the corner of Jackson and Lampkin streets from 8-11 a.m.
