A one-vehicle wreck Saturday on Highway 373 resulted in the death of a Hamilton man.
Eric Wayne Pope, 33, was pronounced dead at the scene due to multiple trauma. The accident occurred near the Lowndes-Monroe County line on the highway around one mile inside Monroe County just past the Columbus Air Force Base.
“(The) time of (the) accident is unknown at this time but apparently took place during the early morning hours,” Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley stated in a press release.
Pope, who was driving north on the highway, lost control of his 2005 Chevy Trailblazer and ran off the road. The car then hit a tree and overturned.
A nearby resident found the vehicle around 10:20 a.m. Saturday. Pope was the only person in the vehicle and was not wearing a seat belt, Gurley stated in the release.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation, and Gurley stated no other information is available regarding the accident.
